Gross Domestic Products
GDP increased by 7.0% in 2006 from 6.2% achieved in
2005...The Sectoral Distribution in the GDP growth in Agriculture,
Industry and Services were 4.8, 6.3 and 8.1percent respectively
in 2006 in comparison to 1.2, 7.9 and 6.7 percent in 2005 respectively.
Domestic Savings to GDP remained almost the same at 17.1 in
2006, to that of 17.2 in 2004. Average Inflation
The Colombo Consumer Price Index (CCPI) has been projected to
rise to 13% for 2006 from the earlier figure of 9.6% iin August
2005.
The Sri Lanka Consumer Price Index (SLCPI) increased slightly
to 8.6 % from below 8% earlier in the year.
Trade Deficit
The value of exports stood at US$6,922 million, in 2006, an
increase of US$ 575 million. Total imports were US$ 10,539 million,
up from the 8,863 Million in 2005. Cost of petroleum imports
US$1,655 million, an increase of 37% in 2005. |

National Poverty Line
The proportion under the national poverty line (23.0%) in Sri
Lanka is low in relation to other countries (data:2006) such
as India (28.6%), Pakistan (32.6%) and the Philippines (36.8%).
But India and the Philippines have been able to lower these
levels by 7.4% and 8.0% respectively, from that of the year
1990.
But the proportion in Sri Lanka had increased by 5%. Overall,
Sri Lanka is regressing in its progress in poverty elevation
compared to most other Asia Pacific countries such as India,
the Philippines and China who are on track while Indonesia,
Iran, Pakistan, Thailand, Turkey and Vietnam are considered
early achievers of the goal number 1.
Maternal Mortality
The maternal mortality rate in Sri Lanka is in line with Democratic
Peoples Republic of Korea, Iran and Papua New Guinea and the
target is yet to be achieved compared to leaders among achievers
such as Maldives, Thailand and Uzbekistan.
Malaria
Malaria Prevalence (P) in Sri Lanka in 2000 was at 1,109.92
with death rate (dr) per 100,000 people at 9.Statistics for
India 7.31 (P) 3 (dr); Vietnam 95.13 (P), 9 (dr) ; Papua New
Guineam 1,688.26 (P), 28 (dr) and Cambodia at 476.49 (P), 14
(dr).
Meanwhile Sri Lanka has been recognised as an early achiever
in implementation of national sustainable developmental strategies
(2004), along Bhutan, Kyrgystan, Myanmar and Uzbekistan.
